The Spirit of Giving Back

Upon moving to Vi at Aventura to retire in 2018, Carol Ures was delighted to find new friends who shared her same passion for giving. She discovered the community’s resident-led volunteer committee, ‘Friends Helping Friends,’ and has since been at the helm of the program’s success.

Ures and her team of generous and devoted residents including Maddy Soriano, Shirlee Schiller, Helen Flegel, Barbara Steinberg, Adrianne Tisherman and Joe Bunson, have already impacted hundreds of lives. In the past several months alone, their efforts have supported underserved children, neglected animals, victims of abuse, the homeless, the hungry, and victims of the Surfside tragedy and Haiti’s earthquake.

“What Carol and the dedicated ‘Friends Helping Friends’ committee have done for our community is truly remarkable,” said Maia Mediavilla, Vi at Aventura Director of Business Development. “They give of their time, talent and resources selflessly while restoring dignity to those in need.”

‘Friends Helping Friends’ works tirelessly to collect, sort, and box everything from personal care items, clothing and school supplies to blankets and cold-weather gear in anticipation of the winter months. To support these altruistic efforts, Vi at Aventura created the Vihicle for Good, a traveling vehicle that sends these passionate residents into the community to demonstrate acts of kindness.

Among the many non-profit organizations ‘Friends Helping Friends’ supports are Aventura Police Department (AVPD), Jewish Community Services of South Florida, Humane Society of Greater Miami and Chapman Partnership.

“The residents at the Vi are an inspiration,” said AVPD Chief Bryan Pegues. “Their sincere dedication to community service continues to leave a lasting and positive impact on our city.”

Dedicated to the welfare of others, Ures and her team have created a legacy of giving and volunteerism at the Vi. “Giving back keeps me going, feeling alive and spirited,” Ures said. “The idea that there is more to do and more to give is why I have never been bored a day in my life.”
