Putting into practice the Jewish tenet of tikkun olam (repairing the world), members and friends of the JCS Alliance, an affinity group of Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS), have organized a team to participate in the ING Miami Marathon on Sunday, January 27.
Team members each pledged at least $500 for the marathon and $250 for the half marathon to The Blue Card, a national nonprofit providing direct financial assistance to needy Jewish Holocaust survivors. All funds raised through the ING Miami Marathon will support Miami Holocaust survivors who are clients of JCS and The Blue Card.
“The stories and strength of Holocaust survivors, for whom I have fought pro bono to obtain benefits from the German Government, inspired me. I am proud to raise funds for The Blue Card, help local Holocaust survivors, and make the world a better place,” said Adam Schwartzbaum, JCS team captain and attorney atWhite&Case, LLP in Miami.
“JCS serves more than 600 Holocaust survivors with a wide range of programs designed to help them to live at home with independence and dignity. The Blue Card, which serves the neediest Holocaust survivors, relies on JCS to evaluate Miami- Dade survivors for their eligibility to become recipients,” said Susan Nierenberg, JCS Program Director for Case Management. She added, “As of December 2012, 11% of the Holocaust survivors served by JCS also receive support from The Blue Card, such as monthly and holiday stipends, a vitamin-supply program, emergency financial assistance, and a personal emergency response system.”
“We are excited that Miami’s runners will support The Blue Card. Those with a connection to Holocaust survivors will encourage team members to raise even more money and finish the race triumphantly,” said Elie Rubinstein, Executive Director of The Blue Card.
The Blue Card is one of 35 official charities participating in the 2013 ING Miami Marathon charity program. Runners who fundraise receive priority registration for this event.
