More than 600 community volunteers helped to make the Jewish High Holidays more meaningful and enjoyable for seniors through Jewish Community Services’ annual Milk and Honey event on Sunday, August 25.
Volunteers met at the Greater Miami Jewish Federation early Sunday morning to assemble gift baskets of special holiday foods for the 420 gift recipients. Once the baskets were assembled, volunteers (including families) delivered them to Holocaust survivors and senior citizens throughout Miami-Dade County. The personal delivery provided a much-needed human touch to the persons receiving baskets.
“This is more than simply delivering food to senior citizens,” said Bonnie Sockel-Stone, volunteer co-chair of the Milk and Honey event. “It is an intergenerational effort that provides senior citizens, many of whom are isolated from the community, with an uplifting experience. The elderly recipients are particularly thrilled to have visits from young children, who participate in the distribution of the food baskets.”
Milk and Honey has been an annual JCS event since 2003. Food baskets are also distributed in the spring in honor of the Passover holiday.
