We Go Beyond to Get You Back to Your MAX” was the theme of the day when Memorial Regional Hospital South hosted an inspirational Aventura Marketing Council Chairman’s Roundtable meeting. The event featured the miraculous survival story of Moise Brutus who lost his hand and legs after barely surviving a horrific motorcycle accident in 2010. Today, Moise, a former rehab patient of the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, is living his life to the fullest and training to compete in the 2016 cycling Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

AMC Chair Cliff Schulman of Weiss, Serota, Helfman joined by Memorial Regional South CEO Doug Zaren and Dr. Alan Novick, Medical Director of the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, welcomed AMC business and community leaders to Christine Lee’s at Gulfstream Park. The luncheon, held shortly before Veterans Day, also provided an opportunity to encourage the community to join in Memorial Regional’s support of organizations including the Wounded Warrior Project and Mission United – helping returning veterans find employment and receive financial aid.

Zaren explained Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood, part of the Memorial Healthcare System, offers a boutique environment enhancing the hospital experience and promoting healing for patients in an attractive, nurturing and homelike setting.

Beyond providing 24-hour emergency care for minor and chronic medical conditions as well as performing life- saving heart transplants at the Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital, “miraculous” recoveries are facilitated at the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute. The complete continuum of care includes inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing care, home health services and outpatient rehabilitation.

Truly exemplifying the “Live Your MAX” mantra, Moise Brutus shared how he made an amazing “never give up” comeback after waking up from a coma to realize he had lost three limbs – and almost his life. After surgery, Moise was admitted to Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, where a highly- trained and caring team of doctors and therapists developed a unique rehabilitation plan tailored to his specific needs. When he was ready to go home, Memorial Home Health Services provided a full spectrum of care utilizing advanced technology and medical equipment.

Once Moise was ready to be independent, he became an outpatient and during this time, and against all odds, he started riding a stationary bicycle. Little did he know this would lead him to set the lofty goal of competing in the 2016 Paralympics.

“A nurse told me that all I really needed was my heart and my head….and she was right! I made a decision to not let this accident define who I would become,” Moise said. “Now, I cycle about 100 miles per week, I go to school and my life is amazing! Whenever I had doubts, I always had the support of many who pushed me through it. I’ve learned so many lessons and feel like the foundation is set for me to accomplish anything I want to!”
