Local World War II veteran to depart MIA for Memorial Day ceremony in England

Aventura resident will be the only American WWII guest of honor at Cambridge American Cemetery’s 75th Anniversary Ceremony

Miami International Airport, in partnership with volunteers from Honor Flight South Florida, will host a sendoff celebration for Aventura resident Sydney Levit, 94, who will be the only World War II veteran representing America as a guest of honor at the Memorial Day 75th Anniversary Ceremony at the Cambridge American Cemetery in England.

Levit – a Purple Heart recipient and decorated war veteran who served as a paratrooper for the U.S. Army throughout Europe during World War II – will be honored by MIA staff, passengers and local honor guards before departing MIA to London Gatwick Airport.

In addition to attending the ceremony at the Cambridge cemetery where many of his fellow soldiers are buried, he will also receive a tour of the military bases and historic locations in England that he last saw during World War II, and fly in a WWII plane with the U.S. Ambassador in London. South Florida donors came together to pay all the travel expenses for Levit and his son, who will be traveling with him.
