Today, former state representative Joseph “Joe” Geller announced the endorsement of incumbent Lucia Baez-Geller in the race to succeed her on the Miami-Dade County School Board.

Lucia Baez-Geller said: “As you may have heard, I am not seeking reelection. However, it is incredibly important that we elect a strong advocate for our students, our parents, and our teachers. And that is why I am supporting Joe Geller, our former state representative, for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, District 3. Joe has been a champion for public education in Tallahassee and he will continue to be one on the school board.”

Lucia Baez-Geller was elected to the Miami-Dade County School Board in 2020 after spending 15 years in the classroom, where she taught English and Language Arts at Miami Beach Senior High School. Baez-Geller has been one of the most progressive voices on the School Board, and was the only board member to vote to recognize October as LGBTQ+ History Month last September. During her tenure, she has prioritized student achievement, mental health, and family involvement, in addition to increasing teacher recruitment and retention. Recognized as the 2013 Political Advocate of the Year by the National Education Association, Baez-Geller has worked with various organizations, including United Teachers of Dade, Florida Education Association, and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. She also served as the Education Chair with the League of Women Voters.

Joe Geller said: “I am honored to receive Lucia’s endorsement to succeed her. Her dedication as a school board member and community leader, especially in her unwavering support for our LGBTQ youth and most vulnerable students, has been nothing short of inspiring. It is a privilege to be supported by such a tireless advocate for education, inclusivity, and the safety of our children. With Lucia’s support, I am confident that we will carry forward her legacy and continue to make our public schools better, safer, smarter and fairer than they have ever been.”

The election for Miami-Dade County School Board will take place on Tuesday, August 20th, 2023.
