The Miami Oratorio Society is presenting a free concert in honor of Black History Month.
“Spirit I” is Saturday, February 10th, 2024,  3pm, at the North Dade Regional Library, 2455 NW 183rd Street, Miami Gardens.

“Spirit”  – a Celebration of Music, Culture & Black History” focuses on the music that began in the 17th century with the simple unison melodies of Africans slaves. In this concert, Miami Oratorio Society, under the direction of Andrew Anderson, will highlight the richness of Black culture and music from Negro Spirituals to Gospel to opera and modern jazz, with the renowned Tim Watson Jazz Band bringing us to the modern day.

The Negro Spiritual is a uniquely American form of music developed from the traditions of African slaves, with the influence of European music and Christian beliefs. It was a means of coping with their existence as human property. Many slaves embraced their slave masters’ religion – Christianity – because of its promise of spiritual liberation even in the face of great suffering. Most Negro Spirituals are “coded”, for instance, references to “the Promised Land” refer, not to Heaven, but to the northern free states a slave could escape to using the Underground Railroad, ie: “Swing Low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home.”  Please join us as we commemorate this age-old journey.
