Celebrating the 65th National LAW DAY, the North Dade Justice Center was once again the South Florida leader with their outstanding LAW DAY program, thanks to Co-chairs Judge Linda Singer Stein and Judge Myriam Lehr and their team including Judge Natalie Moore, Judge Ayana Harris and Judge Chiaka Ihekwaba.

Working closely with their LAW DAY partner for over 20 years, the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce (AMC), Judges Singer Stein and Lehr invited Katie S. Phang, trial attorney, media relations and crisis management consultant, as their keynote speaker to address the 2023 national theme of “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility and Collaboration”.

Judge Lehr introduced her friend, saying, “Katie is a trailblazer.  As a first-generation Korean-American, there were challenges, but she rose above all that to become a voice for the Asian-American community with her TV show, “The Katie Phang Show”, featuring interviews with some of the nation’s top newsmakers to shed light on the intersection of law, politics and culture.”   There was complete silence in the room as Katie spoke from the heart on the theme.

Judge Linda Singer Stein said, “It was a pleasure to welcome Katie back to the North Dade Justice.”

Judge Myriam Lehr added, “As always, this annual event brings our community together, and educates both students and adults as to the importance of the rule of law.”

Major events like this don’t happen without sponsors, and the Judges thanked major sponsors Sheryl Berkowitz, Esq., Fenstersheib & Berkowitz; Jeffrey Levinson and Gregory Roberts from Valley Bank and Al Eskanazy, Community-Police Relations Foundation for their support.

The Judges expressed their appreciation to the ten bar associations that also provided support for this very special LAW DAY : Asian Pacific American Bar Association; Caribbean Bar Association; Colombian American Bar Association; Cuban American Bar Association; Florida Association of Women Lawyers; Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association; Haitian Lawyers Association; North Dade Bar Association; South Broward Bar Association and Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association.

Special thanks were given to Maria Matos, Judicial Assistant to Judge Singer Stein, who coordinated all details at the North Dade Justice Center to assure a smooth-running program.
Attorneys Esther and the Hon. Michael Blynn provided an historical booklet on the North Dade Bar Association’s annual LAW DAY student essay contest.

Young Star singer Camie Liz opened the meeting with “God Bless America” and the North Dade Justice Center Bailiffs led the full-house audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Golden Beach Mayor Glenn Singer gave the invocation, followed by remarks from Chief Judge Nushin Sayfie. Aventura Mayor Howard S. Weinberg, Esq. spoke about Law Day and its importance in his life before Judge Jason Dimitris gave remarks as President of the St. Thomas Law School Peter T. Fay Inns of Court. In an adjacent room watching the proceedings live on the court television were students from Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Sr. High School Law Club and Grace Leadership Preparatory Institute Leaders Club.
