To assist North Miami residents struggling to make timely rent payments due to rent increases, the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (NMCRA) is accepting applications for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program.  This program provides qualified residents up to $5,000 in rental assistance, and interested residents can apply to one of two programs: the Rent Stabilization Program or the Emergency Eviction Prevention Program. Only residents within the North Miami CRA can apply, and funds for this grant will be provided until the reserve is depleted.

The Rent Stabilization Program provides rental assistance for up to 10 months to residents within the North Miami CRA boundaries who are unable to pay rent due to a recent surge in their monthly rental costs. Applicants that apply for assistance will receive up to $500 a month, paid directly to their landlord, to cover for the increase in their existing rent. The rental increase must be 20% or higher to be considered eligible for this grant. Only one member of a household can apply, and priority will be given to seniors aged 60 or older and households with members 18 years old and under.

“A lot of families are going through extreme financial hardships in this economic climate, burdening them with uncertainty as to how they are going to make ends meet,” says Casneve Oupelle, Project Director. “The Emergency Rental Assistance Grant allows households in the North Miami community redevelopment area the ability to afford basic necessities, such as keeping a roof over their head and putting food on the table — we want this to be one less thing that North Miami residents have to worry about.”

In addition to the Rent Stabilization Program, the NMCRA is offering rental assistance through the Emergency Eviction Prevention Program, which aims to help residents within the North Miami CRA who are vulnerable to eviction due to the recent proliferation of evictions in the North Miami area. The maximum assistance for this program is $5,000 per applicant.
