Restauranteur and NoMi pioneer, Jeffery Ross, from Captain Jim’s Seafood, Shares His VisionLike most pioneers of great cities and buzzing communities, Jeffrey Ross has had an incredible career and life. Ross came to Miami by way of Los Angeles, where he first entered the restaurant industry with his critically acclaimed seafood market and restaurant, Bayshore. He sold it 10 years later to, “take a break” and freelanced as a consultant to restaurants who were in need of restructuring, “I worked at a more leisurely pace after 10 years of 16 hour days.”

Most of his family had settled in Miami, so naturally the Magic City was an appropriate next step for the hungry businessman. In the up-and-coming Downtown NoMi (North Miami) area, Ross is known for reviving one of South Florida’s hidden gems, Captain Jim’s Seafood Market Restaurant. After seeing the property one day and falling in love with its charm, he made the decision to purchase it and give it some much-needed TLC. ”You need a vision. If you’re successful, the satisfaction of having a vision and seeing it become a reality is very rewarding. When I first entered Captain Jim’s Seafood I saw it all, even the music. I saw what I knew could be here, and now, it’s here,” said Ross.

Captain Jim’s, as locals endearingly call it, has been a historical part of NoMi since the mid 90’s and continues to be an integral part of the community. Since coming to the area, Ross has become a pioneer of Downtown NoMi. He credits much of the renewal of the area to the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (NMCRA), which has encouraged other businesses, including restaurants, to call Downtown NoMi their home with lower rent and rate, making it the ideal locations for budding and experienced entrepreneurs. It’s on its way to becoming an urban core with several dining options including Captain Jim’s and other gems like the soon-to-open, Café Crème, an extension of the French Bistro BVD located in the design District, which Ross has lent his assistance to.

Captain Jim’s Seafood Market Restaurant has been in business for more than 20 years, with Ross and his partner Larry Cohen celebrating two years of ownership this past April, the restaurant has once again become an attraction. The restaurant has been featured on national TV shows such as ‘Rachael Ray’ and the CNN series, ‘Parts Unknown,’ hosted by Anthony Bourdain. Locally it has been featured on Michelle Bernstein’s PBS series, ‘Check Please.’

It’s the versatility of the restaurant being able to please locals and new comers with fresh, “Boat To Table” seafood and delicious “Dry Dock” specials like their ‘must have’ Chicken Parmesan and Famous Captain’s Marinated Baked Wings, paired with Downtown NoMi’s emerging personality that ensures Captain Jim’s will be here for another 20 years.

If Ross does with NoMi what he’s accomplished with his restaurant, his vision will be very exciting to watch while it becomes a reality.
