It is with the deepest sorrow that the City of Aventura announces the passing of Commissioner Jonathan Evans, 72. Commissioner Evans was elected to the Aventura Commission without opposition and has served the city since November of 2020.
After falling ill in November, Jonathan staged a Tom Brady-esque comeback and gave his loved ones reason for hope. He emerged from a coma and improved little-by-little over recent weeks. Unfortunately, much like his beloved Tom Brady’s final season, Jonathan’s last comeback attempt fell short when he took a sudden turn for the worse recently. He passed away overnight.
Jonathan grew up in Birmingham, England. He immigrated to Boston, where he taught mathematics, coached soccer, and ran a summer camp program at a private school in Cambridge. While living in Boston, Jonathan became an avid fan of their pro sports teams. In 1998, he and his wife Jo-An relocated to Aventura.
Jonathan’s loved ones will remember him for his kindness, generosity, and dry British humor and wit.
He is survived by his wife, Jo-An, brother Simon, step-daughter Emily, her husband Brian, and their son Ethan.
In response to Commissioner Evans’ passing, Mayor Weisman issued the following statement:
“Our city mourns the loss of a wonderful human being, public servant, and friend. Jonathan Evans brought intellect, wit, and care to his role as a commissioner and brightened all our lives. We will all miss him dearly.”
In addition to serving on the Aventura Commission, Commissioner Evans served as the Chairman of the Vice Provost’s Council at Florida International University where he contributed and raised funds for FIU’s Golden Gift First Generation Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to students who are the first in their family to attend college.
A celebration of life will take place sometime in March.
