On Thursday morning, the Miami Marlins introduced Skip Schumaker as the 16th manager of the organization. Schumaker has had quite a career in the MLB, as he spent 11 seasons as a player before finding his way back in the dugout as a part of the coaching staff for both the Padres and the Cardinals.
This hiring will fill the void that former club manager Don Mattingly has left. Schumaker will inherit a club that finished 69-93 this past season and has only had one postseason appearance since their World Series Championship in 2003. Despite the fact that the Marlins have had decades of mediocrity, there is a sense of optimism throughout the organization. Schumaker makes it a focal point of his to not only instill a winning mentality, but to also build a culture prioritizing accountability and hard work.
The campaign for next season has only just begun, but the new manager of the ball club already has just the idea of what qualities he envisions for the coaching staff that will surround him. Schumaker stated that he wants “High-character people” that have an intricate knowledge of the game, but also those who could converse in the Spanish language to alleviate the language barrier. As of now one could beg the question as to if and how Schumaker’s experience as a player and champion will translate to the growth and development of the organization and their promising young talent.
