AACC- May 2015The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center presents Slow Burn Theatre Company’s staging of RENT in May as well as Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s Spring Gala, the Florida Grand Ballet’s performance of La Sylphide and the Hochberg Preparatory School’s beguiling presentation of Annie Jr.

The Slow Burn Theatre Company stages RENT, a Tony Award-winner for Best Musical, on Friday May 1 and Saturday May 2 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m. Set in “Alphabet City” in New York City’s East Village, RENT is loosely based on Puccini’s La Boehme and follows a year in the life of a small group of impoverished artists struggling to create music and art, and survive love, friendship and life under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Tickets are $40 and $45.

On Saturday, May 9 at 7 p.m. Arts Ballet Theatre, under the direction of Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev, concludes its season with the Spring Gala. The program features Issaev’s neo-classical ballet Shostakovich Suites, inspired by the music of the Russian composer who was considered a revolutionary during Stalin’s reign, and Pentimento, an all-time favorite from Venezuelan choreographer Vincente Nebradawhich which includes excerpts from Bach’s “Four Suites for Orchestra.” Tickets are $30.

Students from the Hochberg Preparatory School’s Rousso Musical Theater Program present Annie Jr. on Wednesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. This presentation is a condensed version of the classic Broadway blockbuster which won seven Tony Awards and follows the comic strip heroine and her mutt, Sandy, as they come to live with Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks and help spread optimism during the Great Depression. Tickets are $10 with free lap seats for infants 12 months and under.

The Florida Grand Ballet presents La Sylphide on ThursdayMay 14 at 8 p.m. Afolkloric tale full of mischief and infatuation, La Sylphide reveals the perils of romance when fantasy becomes obsession. Lighthearted and entertaining with a trio of fairies, fantasy and flirtation, it is one of the most treasured of the classical ballets and fun for all audiences. Tickets are $25 and $50.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts manages the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, a 14,864-square-foot, 330-seat waterfront complex that hosts performing arts, cultural and educational programming for all ages.
