Can You “Speak Easy”?
|
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
|
Imagine this – you have been asked to give a presentation, a speech, or a report. Or maybe you have an opportunity to express your ideas to a group of people.
When that happens, does apprehension set in? For some people, the fear of facing an audience can be overwhelming. The good news is, that fear will dissipate when you focus on what your audience needs from you.
I’ll share five tools to help you feel confident and get your message across the next time you speak to any audience, anywhere, and at any time.
- Prepare in advance. Give your speech a structure. Make sure you have an opening (and make it a grabber). You also need a strong closing (hopefully with a call to action).
- Arrive early, so that you can get comfortable with the room. Check the microphone, the a/c and the lectern. Greet your audience members as they arrive.
- Engage your audience by offering a story for each point that you offer. Involve your audience with questions like “Did you ever…?”, “Can you imagine…?”, or “Have you ever experienced…?”.
- Prepare in advance for questions, even if they’re confrontational. Having an answer to any question they may ask will help maintain your credibility.
- Your audience will appreciate a handout. It should remind them of your main points, as well as provide other resources. (Of course, your handout should always provide your contact information.)
Follow these 5 suggestions and you’ll feel a lot better about your next presentation!
