15th annual Claws for a Cause raises more than $190,000

Children’s Home Society of Florida’s 15th annual Claws for a Cause dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 14, welcomed a sold-out crowd of 500 guests and raised more than $190,000 to help over 6,000 vulnerable children and families in Miami-Dade County.

These funds will go toward critical services in our community that break the cycle of abuse in more families and heal the pain for the innocent victims.

The annual event, graciously hosted by Joe’s Stone Crab, is held annually on the night before the restaurant opens to the public for the official beginning of stone crab season.

This year, Children’s Home Society of Florida honored Steve Wernick as the 2015 Child Advocate of the Year for his dedication to advocating for program funding at both the local and state levels. Wernick serves on the board of directors for the Southeastern Division serving Miami- Dade County and has worked closely with Florida state legislators to advocate on behalf of the children.

Children’s Home Society of Florida also honored the 2015 Legislators of the Year for their invaluable support of Embracing Children. Inspiring Lives. Special thanks was given to Rep. Erik Fresen, Rep. David Richardson, and Sen. René Garcia for their commitment.

On the front lines since 1902, Children’s Home Society of Florida is the oldest and largest statewide organization devoted to helping children and families. Children’s Home Society of Florida serves approximately 100,000 children and families throughout the state each year.
