As a naturalist, civic activist, sailor, and photographer, Coconut Grove’s most beloved pioneer, Ralph Middleton Munroe, would no doubt be pleased to know that his home — now the Barnacle Historic State park — again is playing host to an annual Earth Week celebration.

Earthlings will gather Apr. 28, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., to celebrate environmental protection and Mother Earth during this family-fun event with Little Ladies & Gents Child Expo Events at The Barnacle Historic State Park, 3485 Main Hwy. in Coconut Grove. Admission is $5 for ages 6 and older; $3 for ages 2 to 5, and kids under 2 are free.

Families and friends of the Barnacle Society may bike ride over to the park, where Bike Coconut Grove will valet bikes for free. All ages can pedal their way to delicious smoothies on the bike blender, and kids can decorate their wheels before joining the bike parade at 2 p.m.

Miami guitarist and vocalist Lenny Batista will provide the tunes while park guests enjoy Earth-friendly products, food, games, and crafts. Picnics and leashed pets are welcome.

Performing in South Florida for more than 20 years Batista plays a broad mix of classics, both old and contemporary, rock, pop, country, and musica Latina. His playlist ranges from The Eagles to Cat Stevens, and from Van Morrison to Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls. He also takes special requests — including the all-time favorite Earth Day tune, “This Land is Tour Land,” by Woody Guthrie.

About the Estate
Munroe, who had a true passion for the natural world around him, including the sea, built the Barnacle in 1891. A prolific designer of yachts, he also founded the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club where he held the position of Commodore for 22 years.

Situated on the shore of the bay, Munroe’s residence, now The Barnacle Historic State Park, is the oldest home in its original location in all of Miami-Dade.

The park is administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and events are sponsored by The Barnacle Society Inc., including outdoor films and myriad family fun and cultural events — all to raise funds to support this historic attraction in the heart of Coconut Grove.

According to Barnacle Society president John Palenchar, the secluded walkway into the park through the property’s tropical hardwood hammock provides visitors a glimpse of Miami’s original landscape going back to the 1920s.

“With the first awe-inspiring view of the house, the bay, and the boathouse at shore’s edge it’s clear to see, this is one of the best spots in all of Miami-Dade County to celebrate Mother Earth,” he said.
