On Saturday, May 13, 2023, the Miami community will gather at Tropical Park to help support and fund a cure for ALS. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive motor neuron disease that gradually robs people of their ability to walk, talk, swallow and eventually breathe. ALS has no known cause or cure, but there is hope. Members of the Miami community and individuals living with ALS like Albert Uster, are rallying together to change that.

Albert Uster was an accomplished marathoner, ultramarathoner, a father and successful businessman. In early 2020 he began noticing some symptoms in his ability to hold his head up and was originally diagnosed with a weak neck. Considering he was an athlete and in good physical health he decided to get a second opinion. After months of doctor’s appointments and referrals he ended up with a devastating, fatal ALS diagnosis.

“My attitude in life is seize the day…don’t leave any hill unclimbed or stone unturned. And that is what I intend to do, for as long as I can.” – Albert Uster

ALS patients, like Albert, along with their families and friends, advocates and supporters, will make a 1-mile trek through Tropical Park along the Walk To Defeat ALS route hoping their steps will make a difference for ALS patients living in Miami-Dade.  Many who walk have a loved one who is still fighting the life-limiting disease. Others walk in memory of a loved one who has lost the battle. Many people, without any personal connection, walk to support efforts to help fund research to make ALS a livable disease for everyone, everywhere – until we find a cure.

In attendance will be Miami Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava who will announce and read the ALS Awareness Day proclamation prior to the walk.

The Walk to Defeat ALS is our signature event in which all funds directly support cutting-edge research and patient care. In 2022, Walk to Defeat ALS events in Florida raised over $902,000.
