Latin Café 2000 hosted its sixth annual pig pardoning ceremony on Monday, Dec.11, where Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava officially pardoned two lucky pigs who are now saved from South Florida’s dinner table family tradition of roasted pig, Caja China or Lechon for the holidays.
Taylor and Travis have been rescued by Bonanza Equestrian Center. Bonanza Equestrian Center, known for its party entertainment services and equestrian school, will provide these two pigs a safe haven with ample space to run and play, making it their new permanent home.
The pigs, Taylor and Travis, were named by Valerie and Melanie Berrio, daughters of Alfonso Berrio, owner of Bonanza Equestrian Center, in their admiration of Taylor Swift, reflecting their love for her music and influence.
“I’m thrilled to be here with Latin Cafe 2000, kicking off the annual event for a great holiday season,” Mayor Levine Cava said. “With today’s pardon, both Taylor and Travis will be exempt from being the main course at the Christmas table for the remainder of their lives.
“And today, they will make their way towards their new forever home, Bonanza, a local farm and equestrian center where they’ll live out their golden years free from the Caja China and hungry Miamians,” the mayor added.
“We began this tradition at Latin Cafe 2000 as a way to bring together the community, and we are so amazed this is now our sixth year,” said Eric Castellanos, owner of Latin Cafe 2000, located in Brickell, LeJeune, and Hialeah. “The pig pardoning ceremony symbolizes our commitment to community and compassion. It’s a unique Miami tradition my wife and I proudly maintain, which mirrors our diverse and vibrant culture. We’re proud to collaborate with Bonanza Equestrian Center this year, ensuring a safe and joyful future for Taylor and Travis.”
“We’re thrilled to continue our beloved tradition with this year’s pig pardoning event at Latin Cafe 2000,” Kali Castellanos said. “We celebrate the rescue of Taylor and Travis, the 12th and 13th pigs saved through this six-year tradition. Their rescue is more than sparing lives; it’s a testament to our community’s commitment to blending cultural celebrations with acts of kindness.”
