A Presidential Library Is Miami’s Moment

There is little question that a presidential library is a feather in any city’s cap. But in Miami—particularly at this moment—it could be something far more consequential.

Downtown Miami is slowly but surely re-emerging as a cultural, retail, and civic hub. We see the momentum. We feel the energy returning. But let’s be honest: it’s not happening fast enough. If Miami is serious about accelerating this transformation, we need bold, catalytic investments that draw people downtown not just for an event or a weekend—but as a destination with staying power.

A presidential library would do exactly that.

Downtown Miami sits just across the street from the Port of Miami—where millions of visitors pass through each year. Miami has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to anchor downtown with a world-class institution that blends history, culture, education, and civic engagement. A presidential library would not only attract tourists who already flow through our city; it would give South Florida residents a compelling reason to return downtown again and again.

Economically, the case is overwhelming. Presidential libraries generate permanent, long-term impact. They attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, driving spending at hotels, restaurants, museums, shops, and transit hubs. They create high-quality jobs—educators, archivists, curators, hospitality professionals—and they anchor surrounding development. In cities across the country, presidential libraries generate tens to hundreds of millions of dollars in annual economic activity. Miami, with its tourism-driven economy and global visibility, is uniquely positioned to maximize those returns.

Culturally and educationally, the benefits are equally powerful. A presidential library would serve as a major research and learning center for students, educators, and scholars. It would host exhibitions, civic dialogues, leadership programs, and school partnerships that deepen understanding of history, democracy, and public service. For Miami-Dade students, it would provide access to educational opportunities found in few cities nationwide—and elevate Miami’s profile as a center for thought leadership and civic discourse.

Equally important is the community impact. Presidential libraries are gathering places. They bring people together across backgrounds, generations, and viewpoints—something that aligns perfectly with Miami’s diversity and global identity. They create space for conversation, connection, and shared learning rooted in the American experience.

And let’s be clear: this is not about politics.

Regardless of which president the library honors, the value lies in the institution itself—the jobs, the tourism, the academic investment, the cultural enrichment, and the civic programming. A presidential library is a long-term investment in a city’s future, not a statement about partisan allegiance.

Miami has always thrived when it thinks boldly. A presidential library would strengthen our economy, expand opportunities for students and families, enrich our cultural life, and reinforce Miami’s standing as one of America’s most dynamic and globally connected cities.

If we’re serious about accelerating downtown’s transformation, this is exactly the kind of opportunity we should seize.
