Nearly 600 Miami-Dade County public school students participated on July 18 in the “Achieve Summer Showcase,” the culminating event of Miami-based education nonprofit
Achieve Miami’s six-week summer program.
Hosted across four school campuses, including Caribbean K-8 Center, Jesse J. McCrary Jr. Elementary, Frederick Douglass Elementary, and Lake Stevens Elementary, the showcase featured student-led exhibits and live Shark Tank style presentations to panels of business leaders, educators, and professionals from some of South Florida’s most prominent organizations.
Throughout the summer, hundreds of elementary and middle school students, known as “Little Buddies,” transformed their classrooms into hands-on exhibits focused on issues like endangered species, emotional wellness, and hunger. Meanwhile, high school “Achieve Scholars” developed and pitched original proposals addressing timely challenges such as affordable housing, mental health stigma, and access to fresh food, applying entrepreneurial thinking, creativity, and communication skills to propose solutions to issues faced by communities across South Florida.
Panelists included representatives from FIFA, Morgan Stanley, City National Bank of Florida, Florida International University, and others, giving students a unique opportunity to share their work with decision-makers and receive feedback from leaders beyond the classroom.
“Achieve Summer is about opening doors and leveling the playing field by bringing high quality summer learning within reach for students who might not otherwise have access,” said Rachel Saiontz Geary, director of Philanthropy at Achieve Miami. “Our annual showcase brings that work to center stage, celebrating six weeks of discovery, hard work, creativity, and putting new skills into action.”
In addition to project-based learning and social-emotional development, Achieve Summer includes enrichment experiences designed to broaden student horizons. This year’s cohort participated in field trips to local institutions including Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, and Zoo Miami.
Achieve Summer supports students who often lack access to academic and enrichment opportunities when school is out of session. By centering hands-on learning, collaboration, and mentorship, the program helps students build the skills and confidence to thrive in and beyond the classroom.
