Albizu University President Sotoj oins AGB Council of Presidents

Albizu University recently announced that Dr. Nelson E. Soto has been appointed to the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) Council of Presidents.

The council leverages its members’ experience, perspectives, and insights with active leadership roles for the development of AGB expertise designed to strengthen board governance across higher education.

Dr. Soto accepted the opportunity to serve on the Council of Presidents because he is a visionary higher education leader who focuses on enabling and encouraging change and embodies the Albizu philosophy of multicultural education. The central underpinning of his values and professional experience is promoting justice, diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

Dr. Soto is deeply committed to ensuring that all individuals have access to higher education and the opportunity to improve their own lives and those of their families, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The AGB Council of Presidents regularly convenes to discuss the strategic priorities across higher education and includes representatives from a range of institutional types, including public and private, large and small, single institution and multi-campus system, two- and four-year, religious and secular, and domestic and international.

This diversity affords the group a broad pool of experiences that help inform AGB about the obstacles and macro-level trends that governing boards face. In turn, AGB leverages its advisory groups to create tools and resources that benefit over 2,000 institutions and 40,000 members.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact,” Dr. Soto said. “As higher education faces significant challenges, it is essential that we unite in our efforts. I am honored to collaborate with such a distinguished group of peers.”

The Council of Presidents is one of five councils that enhance AGB’s thought leadership. The other councils similarly represent key leadership roles and priority areas: Board Leaders, Board Professionals, Foundation Leaders, and Senior Fellows.

“By serving on our AGB councils, our council members generously lend their valuable time and significant talents to advancing governance and best practices across higher education,” said Framroze Virjee, AGB president and CEO. “Alongside the AGB Board of Directors, AGB consultants, and other board governance experts, the AGB Council of Presidents works to ensure that boards across the country are receiving premier guidance on leading practices in board governance throughout the year.

“These council members ensure that we are aware of not only the pressing issue of the moment, but also what our members need from AGB to lead in the boardroom. It is a crucial partnership, and I so appreciate their hard work.”
