PRESS RELEASE FROM SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER DANNY ESPINO, DISTRICT 5

As part of Victims of Communism Week, an initiative introduced by Miami-Dade County School Board  Member Danny Espino and unanimously supported by the entire School Board, Miami Springs Senior  High School welcomed Ambassador Armando Valladares as a distinguished guest speaker.

Victims of Communism Week is observed across the district to honor the more than 100 million people  who have suffered under communist regimes worldwide. The initiative brings educational programming  into schools to help students understand the human cost of totalitarianism and underscores the  importance of protecting liberty, democracy, and human dignity.

Ambassador Valladares, a former Cuban political prisoner who spent 22 years incarcerated for refusing  to support Fidel Castro’s ideology, shared his powerful testimony of resilience, faith, and the enduring  fight for human rights. He recounted the harsh conditions he endured, the moral courage required to  survive, and his lifelong commitment to advocating for freedom around the world.

The visit was made possible through an invitation from Board Member Espino, who represents District 5.  Board Member Espino emphasized the importance of firsthand narratives in helping students understand  the real consequences of political oppression.

“Ambassador Valladares’ story is one of extraordinary bravery and unwavering dignity,” said Board  Member Espino. “It is critical that our students hear from survivors who can illuminate the realities of  communism and inspire future generations to defend freedom and human rights.”

Students and staff gathered in the school’s library for the event, engaging in a thoughtful question-and answer session following the Ambassador’s remarks. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to  hear a living witness discuss one of the most significant chapters in Cuban and global human-rights  history.

Ambassador Valladares has served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights  Commission and remains an influential voice in global efforts to expose political repression and promote  democratic values.
