Annual Community Pillars awards ceremony scheduled for June 26

The Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Heritage Planning Committee will host its annual “Community Pillar” awards and “Young Pillar” scholarship presentation on Saturday, June 26.

This year’s event will be held at the Miami Biscayne Bay Marriott, 1633 N. Bayshore Dr. from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. The ceremony also will be livestreamed on the Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/BlackAffairsAB/.

This year’s Community Pillars are:
Danny P. Felton Sr., CEO of “The Experts” Real Estate Group;
Rashad Thomas, director for Strategic Partnerships and Community Relations, PortMiami;
Elder Kenneth Duke, Pastor, New Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church;
Joy Starkey, program director, Minority Business Development Agency;
Paola Pierre, immediate past chair, Haitian American Chamber of Commerce, and
Deric T. Smith, CEO, Supreme Roofing & Construction.

This year’s Corporate Pillar Award is being presented to Connie Kinnard, vice president, Multicultural Tourism for the Greater Miami Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (GMCVB).

The Black Heritage Planning Committee also is awarding scholarships to five Young Pillars:
George Pickens IV, Tennessee State University;
Osamega Urhoghide, University of South Florida;
Courtnee Fields, Miami Dade College;
Tyrese Adisa, Florida International University, and
Tyrece Davis, University of Central Florida.

Additionally, the Greater Miami’s Convention & Visitor Bureau’s Black Hospitality Initiative (BHI) will be presenting scholarships to three students as part of our annual collaboration.

The scholarships will go to the following students:
• Azel Ciriaco, Aviation Management, Florida Memorial University;
• Alem Richardson, Culinary Arts, Miami Dade College, and
• Danielle Montgomery, Hospitality Management, Florida International University.

The Black Hospitality Initiative is a not-for-profit organization working to
encourage equitable economic and increased workforce participation of African Americans and Blacks of African Descent in the Greater Miami Visitor Industry.

“These honorees have been selected for their support of programs or businesses which positively impact the African American community and have a deep commitment to public service. Most of them have toiled tirelessly without fanfare for years in their chosen community path,” said Edgar Wright, chair of the Black Heritage Planning Committee.
