The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will present NEA Jazz Master, two-time Emmy and Oscar nominee, eight-time Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard as part of the critically acclaimed Jazz Roots series on Feb. 20.
Blanchard will perform his iconic Malcolm X Jazz Suite with his band, The E-Collective, and two-time Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet, in commemoration of the centennial of the iconic human rights and civil rights leader. Blanchard created the project following the release of Spike Lee’s 1992 biopic Malcolm X, for which Blanchard wrote the score and performed most of the trumpet cues. A reworking of the score for quintet, the Jazz Suite has been updated and expanded and has rippled through Blanchard’s work for the past three decades.
Tickets to Malcolm X Jazz Suite are $53-$152 and may be purchased at ArshtCenter.org or at the Arsht box office by calling 305-949-6722.
Malcolm X Jazz Suite is part of the 2025-26 Jazz Roots season and is made possible with generous support from Baldwin Richardson Foods, Steinway & Sons, Lexus and Alan & Diane Lieberman. WLRN and WDNA are media sponsors.
Jazz Roots Sound Check
A part of the Jazz Roots series from its inception in 2008, Jazz Roots Sound Check welcomes high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools to the Knight Concert Hall for free sound checks, lectures and, on occasion, opportunities to perform with headline artists from the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Jazz Roots concert series.
Jazz Roots Sound Check is presented by Baldwin Richardson Foods and made possible in part by Hazel Rosen, Melanie and Martin Kirschner and Melvin Kirk.
About the artist
Terence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies – past and present. A true “Renaissance” man, Blanchard stands tall as one of jazz’s most-esteemed trumpeters and defies expectations by creating a spectrum of artistic pursuits. Boundary-breaking and genre-defying, Blanchard is recognized globally as a dazzling soloist and a prolific composer for film, television, opera, Broadway, orchestras and for his own ensembles.
Born in New Orleans in 1962, Blanchard is a musical polymath who launched his solo career as a band leader in the 1990s. Since then, he has released 20 solo albums, garnered 15 Grammy nominations, composed for the stage and for more than 60 films, and received 10 major commissions. He has been named an official 2024 NEA Jazz Master as well as a member of the 2024 class of awardees for the esteemed American Academy of Arts and Letters, and currently serves as the executive artistic director for SF Jazz, the largest non-profit jazz presenter in the world.
