The award-winning cosmetic dentist has spent almost three decades improving and brightening smiles in South Florida at Relax and Smile Dental Care. But now he is forging a new career path as an inspirational speaker and author, and as an elite hypnotherapist.
Dr. Roth recently unveiled Relax and Smile Wellness Center, a multi-room office suite located one floor above his second-story dental practice in Downtown Miami. Separate rooms will be affordably rented at hourly rates to fellow holistic practitioners such as reiki masters, acupuncturists and massage therapists.
Although he still will practice dentistry two days a week—during which time he will continue to care for patients, train associates and offer free second opinions—he will dedicate the remainder of his time to developing and improving the Wellness Center and broadening his influence on the motivational and self-development writing and public speaking circuits.
Dr. Roth has also come up with a concept, “Enlightening Whitening,” in which his patients relax in a massage chair while getting their teeth whitened and listening to a hypnosis session. Patients emerge feeling relaxed, recharged and with a whiter, brighter smile.
“I always ask my patients if they love what they’re doing and I’d say maybe 10 percent of them say yes,” says Dr. Roth. “The others are just making a living and not a life. I want to shift people’s consciousness and show them that you can make a career switch, find your passion and do something you love. If you do that, you’ll never work another day in your life.”
A Miami native who earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and his doctorate in dental medicine from Tufts School of Dental Medicine in 1989, Dr. Roth first became enamored with hypnotism and neurolinguistics when he attended a Hypnosis for Dentists class at a hypnosis convention in 2007. Within two months he decided to be certified and has averaged 50-100 hours of continuing education every year since.
Today Dr. Roth holds 25 different certifications from organizations such as the International Association of Counselors and Therapists (for whom he is also a trainer), National Guild of Hypnotists, National Hypnosis Federation and National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists.
“Hypnosis may resolve many issues: anxiety, depression, public speaking, sports performance, allergies, fertility; you name it and it can be treated with hypnosis,” he said. “It’s just amazing what you can do when you resolve the emotional component of a problem or a disease.”
He maintains that there is an intrinsic relationship between emotional and mental health and physical well being. As a dentist, he recognized this relationship over the years in a disturbing dental trend: teeth grinding.
“When I got out of school 27 years ago, I would notice that maybe 10 to 15 percent of people grind their teeth,” he says. “Now it’s up to 85 percent. You clench and grind your teeth because you’re stressed and worried. When one is stressed, the immune system breaks down, you get periodontal disease, migraines and headaches. Half of migraines are dentally related. I have the opportunity to connect with my patients and teach them how to let go of worry and have a more positive outlook on life. I call it ‘Zentistry.’”
Dr. Roth educates health professionals and the public through his speaking and writing. He teaches about the connection between our emotional and physical health and that there is a connection between our conscious and subconscious that, when not balanced, results in disease.
To date, he has been a guest speaker for the Holistic Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, Nova Medical School, PATH (Positive Alternative Treatment and Healing) and H3, a breast cancer support group. He is a contributing author and has written the chapter titled “Seven Secrets to Letting Go of Worry” in the forthcoming self-help book, “Reach Your Greatness: Top Thought Leaders Share Their Secrets for Living an Extraordinary Life.”
“I love helping people move forward in life, giving them a sense of relief and having them feel better when they leave than they did before seeing me” he says. “That’s always my goal whether I’m working as a dentist, a hypnotist, a speaker or a writer. I want to help people. It’s my calling.”
