Bank of America recently announced it will donate $65,000 to Feeding South Florida to address food insecurity across Miami-Dade and Broward County by providing immediate access to nutritious meals.

In total, Bank of America will donate $18 million to hunger relief organizations in local communities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

“Bank of America’s donation helps Feeding South Florida address the barriers to food security that families currently face as a result of the pandemic and inflation challenges,” said Paco Vélez, president and CEO, Feeding South Florida. “We appreciate it when organizations like Bank of America take action and collaborate to help us end hunger.”

Feeding South Florida is the region’s leading provider of emergency food assistance, distributing healthy food through innovative direct-service programs and a network of roughly 300 nonprofit partner agencies that promote long-term sustainability to help individuals and families live better, more independent lives. Programs and services include the Mobile Pantry Program, Emergency Food Assistance Program, Summer Meals Program, and others. With more than 98 percent of all donations distributed back into the community, Feeding South Florida distributed nearly 176 million pounds of food last year to more than 1.4 million individuals.

Earlier this year, Bank of America announced it would make a $100 donation to local hunger relief organizations and food banks for each employee who received a coronavirus vaccine or booster shot, resulting in $10.6 million in charitable grants to food banks and hunger relief organizations throughout the country.

Last fall, the bank launched a second campaign, donating $50 for each employee who reported a new a coronavirus vaccine or booster shot, as well as an annual flu shot. In addition, the second booster campaign included a $1.5 million donation to international hunger organizations based outside of the U.S.

“This campaign accomplishes two goals: supporting the health and safety of our teammates and helping address a critical need in our communities,” said Gene Schaefer, president, Bank of America Miami. “Because of the steps taken by our teammates, food banks and other South Florida organizations are receiving the resources needed to help fight food insecurity.”

The company has encouraged staff to get coronavirus vaccinations since summer 2021 and has offered incentives such as paid time-off and $500 credits towards health benefit premiums. In partnership with local nonprofits, Bank of America also has distributed more than 40.5 million masks, nearly 43,000 cases of hand sanitizer and 12.2 million gloves in local communities as part of its ongoing efforts to address health-related disparities accelerated by the pandemic.
