The Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced recently that more than 50 nonprofits in Miami have been awarded approximately $1.7 million in grants in 2015.
Newly announced in the fourth quarter are grants to the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, which received $500,000, and this year’s Neighborhood Builders recipients — Educate Tomorrow and Branches Inc. — which will each receive $200,000 in flexible funding.
“These organizations do an incredible amount, but it takes collaboration and support from both the private and public sector to help them build thriving communities that positively impact us all,” said Gene Schaefer, Bank of America Miami market president.
“I’m moved by the passion and dedication of those who lead Miami’s nonprofits and see the results of their efforts on a daily basis, including the dedication of the number of committed volunteers who contribute not only funding, but their time and skills to nonprofits.”
The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, a longstanding community partner with Bank of America, was awarded a $500,000 grant to benefit the “Campaign for Frost Science,” helping to fund construction for its new facility at downtown Miami’s Museum Park, opening summer 2016.
Also announced were the 2015 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders in Miami — a strategic investment that couples leadership training with a $200,000 unrestricted grant. This year’s recipients will each utilize their funding for education programs that help underserved youth prepare for college:
Branches Inc., which serves, educates and inspires people through student, family, and financial stability services, will use the funds to develop the Climb thru College Program, which prepares high school students to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to succeed in college.
Educate Tomorrow serves current and former foster and homeless youth in Miami-Dade County who are eligible for college tuition waivers from the State of Florida. Educate Tomorrow will use the funds to expand its on-campus college coaching programs for students attending MDCPS, Miami Dade College and Florida International University.
In addition, throughout 2015, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $760,000 to more than 50 nonprofits through its three annual grant periods. The grants benefit organizations that support issues related to workforce development and education, community development and revitalization such as affordable housing and the arts, and basic human services.
The bank’s philanthropic mission also extends to its employees, who have donated more than 4,500 volunteer hours to date to nonprofit organizations in Miami as part of the company’s annual goal to donate 2 million volunteer hours nationally. Additionally, the bank supports employee giving to qualifying charitable organizations through the Foundation’s Matching Gifts program.
