Global Water Brigades and their local volunteers have partnered with BARU Urbano Brickell, 1001 S. Miami Ave., for a fundraising after hours event on July 17, from 5 to 8 p.m.
For a $15 donation, guests will receive appetizers and a free drink. Proceeds from this event will help communities access increased quantities of clean water through infrastructural development, water treatment, community leader capacity building, and education.
Local volunteer, Denise Erwin, of Seasons 52 in Coral Gables, advises that in the rural Honduran and Ghanaian communities, where the Water program currently operates, families have limited access to sufficient, clean water. In fact, people travel hours each day to collect and carry home water in buckets and jugs.
Even that water might be subject to high levels of contamination, including parasites and bacteria, and is rarely treated before being consumed. Those contaminated sources can be completely consumed during the dry season, requiring community members to collect water from more distant locations, using more of their time and energy.
Without clean water, community members, especially children and the elderly, are at high risk of contracting water-related illnesses, which lead to serious health issues and even death.

Speaking of Seasons 52, community involvement is big on the list of priorities. Most recently the restaurant hosted an After Hours fundraiser for the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club May Van Sickle Children’s Dental Clinic. The clinic provides more that $220,000 annually in free dental care to the children of the working poor.
Guests enjoyed drinks, flatbreads with door prizes and raffle prizes donated by Enid Miguez (her fabulous rum cake), art by Lucy Tamajon, and restaurant gift certificates donated by Miami’s Community Newspapers. Among the many enjoying the affair were CGWC president Mayra Dominguez, Kate Swain, Susie Tilson, Nubielena Medina, Marianella Watanabe, Nancy Concepcion, Maria Martinez, Ruth Martinez, and Betty Alvarez, to mention a few. Lots of Coral Gables Rotarians also supported the event including past president Yolanda Woodbridge; incoming president Carlos Bolado and wife, Terry; Bill Quesenberry and Kristy Fueyo, as well as Marco Dell’Api from the American Diabetes Association.
Numerous local charities are partnering with the Westin Colonnade for their Scoops of Hope breakfast scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, 7:30-10:30 a.m., at the hotel, located at 180 Aragon Ave. in Coral Gables. Proceeds will benefit Give Kids the World Village and local participating charities. Tickets are only $10 per person and include a great buffet breakfast with ice cream for dessert, something that is always available at the GKTW Village where children and their families are invited for a free all expenses paid vacation with their families.
There will be door prizes and a silent auction to add to the morning’s fun. Kids love this event as who doesn’t love ice cream?
