On Friday, Mar. 8, at 7 a.m., Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will lead the 11th annual Bike to Work Day alongside Miami-Dade Parks director Maria I. Nardi, and three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, who will be serving as ride marshal.
March is Florida Biking Month, a time for residents and visitors to explore the social, health, and environmental benefits of cycling in the community, while learning about road safety.
Leaders of Parks’ county-cycling initiative, Bike305, will begin the event with a cycling safety presentation that will include helmet fitting and distribution for those who don’t already have a properly fitting helmet. After that, LeMond will take over as Special Ride Marshal to lead participants on a casual ride spanning almost seven miles. The ride is open to all who wish to join, and there will be an A and a B group so that riders can choose the length and agility level that feels most comfortable for them.
Group A will ride west from the county’s picturesque Crandon Park Marina at 7:20 a.m. with a climb up and descent down the William Powell Bridge on the Rickenbacker Causeway. Their ride will be 6.4 miles in length.
Group B will take the less challenging part of the course, merging with Group A on the northwest side the William Powell Bridge at approximately 7:40 a.m. The total distance of the ride for Group B will be 3.4 miles.
Together, Groups A and B will then travel down South Miami Avenue onto the bike path of the recently completed bike path of The Underline, over the historic Miami River, and into the City of Miami’s Government Center Downtown. Both groups will have police escorts and traffic enforcement, as well as transportation for bikes and riders back to the ride start.
During the program’s closing ceremony, Bike305 will present one of Miami-Dade County’s 34 municipalities with its Bike305 Municipality of the Year Award and LeMond will offer closing remarks.
Crandon Park Marina is located at 4000 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne.
