The event will begin with a cocktail reception at 11:30 a.m., followed by brunch at noon. All event proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s newly renovated South Beach location.

Florida Power & Light Company (FLP), a long-standing supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, will be receiving the “From the Heart Award.” The award honors a person, family or organization that has shown overwhelming support and constant dedication to the children of the community and beyond.

Irene White, director of External Affairs & Corporate Energy Outreach for FPL, will be accepting the award on behalf of the organization.

Joe’s, located at 11 Washington Ave., Miami Beach, will open up its restaurant for brunch on May 1 only for supporters of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s “Claws for Kids.”

Menu items will include stone crabs, coleslaw, hash brown potatoes, creamed spinach and Key Lime pie. For those who don’t eat stone crabs, main course options will be available.

Frank Sinatra impersonator Jeff Grainger of Sinatra Sounds Entertainment will provide entertainment. During the event, guests will be able to purchase raffle tickets for wonderful prizes including a super raffle for the chance to win a seven-day Caribbean cruise for two aboard one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s beautiful ships.

Judith Kramer, who has chaired the event three times in its five-year history, is chairing this year’s event. Kramer is a retired Miami-Dade County Public Schools executive.

“We are happy to present ‘Claws for Kids’ for the fifth consecutive year,” Kramer said. “The funds raised from this event will play a huge part in the future of the South Beach location, which is a wonderful place for area youth to enjoy Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s life-changing programs.”

In addition to Kramer, “Claws for Kids” committee members include Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade former board president and current special events chair Olga Guilarte, Kerrin Bermont, Vanessa Bertran, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade board member Willie Ho, Lisa Kramer, Lisa Mendelson, Connie Rebozo, Rae Stein, Gian Traina, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade board member Dr. Mark Walker.

Dr. Michael and Lynda Gordon are retuning as the event’s Main Claw Sponsors and Eller-ITO Stevedoring Company LLC is the Claw Sponsor. Additional “Claws for Kids” tables, sponsorship, and underwriting opportunities are still available and range from $500 to $7,500. Individual tickets are priced at $250.

After having served the children of Miami Beach for 27 years, the prior 2,500-square-foot South Beach Club on the existing site was demolished in September 2011 to make way for the new facility. The new South Beach Club features a teen center, state-of-the-art computer lab, teaching kitchen for children, homework rooms, games rooms and a creative arts room, and serves approximately 400 children from the local area.
