The Miami Foundation has announced that Carlos A. Abaúnza has joined the organization as chief financial officer.
Abaúnza brings more than 30 years of experience in finance, accounting, taxation, risk management, information technology and human resources.
“Carlos has a proven track record of superb financial management and a deep appreciation for our mission,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “I know the foundation will benefit from his knowledge and experience. I am confident he will successfully guide our investments and provide our donors with the highest level of service and support on the management of their philanthropic assets.”
Abaúnza is responsible for all financial and fiscal management aspects of the foundation’s operations. His role includes providing leadership and coordination in the business planning, accounting, finance and budgeting work of the foundation.
He most recently was chief financial officer of I-595 Express LLC, where he helped oversee the successful execution of the design, finance, operations and maintenance of the $1.7 billion project for the construction and operation of the overhaul of I-595 highway in Broward County.
Abaúnza also has held senior finance and accounting positions at Florida East Coast Industries, Knight Ridder and World Fuel Services Corporation, and served as director and chairman of the audit committee for The American-Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF).
Abaúnza holds a master’s degree in business administration, a master’s degree in accounting and a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant. He lives in the Coral Gables area with his family and volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
