As the Open Enrollment Period approaches, individuals and families who get their insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace (HealthCare.gov) should prepare for major government changes. All of these changes will apply to every insurance company in Florida.
Here are answers to three key questions that will help Floridians prepare for Open Enrollment on Nov. 1.
1. What’s different about this Open Enrollment Period?
The government has changed some important rules that affect everyone who buys health insurance through the Marketplace. Many who get a subsidy (financial help) to help lower their monthly costs may get less of this financial help next year. Also, more steps and information may be required to get or keep a subsidy, and there will be fewer opportunities to enroll outside of the fall Open Enrollment Period.
2. Will all subsidies (tax credits) go away after 2025?
No, the subsidies for Marketplace health plans are not going away entirely. However, the enhanced subsidies, which are extra financial help the government added in 2021, will expire unless Congress renews them. If this happens, many people will lose some of or all their financial help, making their monthly insurance costs more expensive starting in January.
3. How can I find affordable coverage in light of these changes?
Working with a licensed and experienced health insurance agent can make this process easier. Agents are specially trained experts who can explain the government changes, help find the best plan for a family’s needs, and help families qualify for the most financial assistance possible. And for those who need to find a plan with a lower monthly cost, an agent can help.

The enrollment and renewal processes may be different and will likely take longer than before, so it is important to be ready for enrolling on Nov. 1. Because of these changes, many people will need help this year. Having the right health insurance gives families security and peace of mind that they’re not alone in paying for medical care and prescription drug needs.
