Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins participated in two back- to-school events in Little Havana on Saturday, Aug. 7.
The commissioner partnered with Miami-Dade District 6 School Board member Mari Tere Rojas at Ada Merritt K-8 Center and sponsored the Amigos for Kids Blue Backpack Project at Jose Marti Park. Hundreds of students received free book bags with school supplies to make sure they’ are ready for the 2021-22 school year.
On Saturday morning, the District 5 team joined School Board member Rojas, City of Miami Police, and the Ada Merritt K-8 Center staff for the fifth annual M-DCPS District 6 Backpack Giveaway event. Hundreds of students were able to enjoy a variety of fun, family-friendly activities as they prepare for the new school year — including games, a deejay, and refreshing snow cones. The Share Your Heart Program also provided breakfast and lunch meals to-go for all of the participating families.
Following the event, the District 5 team continued the summer fun at the Amigos for Kids Blue Backpack Project “Big Distribution” event at Jose Marti Park. Students got to play games, pick out the perfect book, and get a backpack filled with school supplies. Commissioner Higgins provided carnival games and entertainment for all the families to enjoy.
“During this time, when budgets are tight and many families are experiencing financial hardships, it’s important to offer families one less thing they have to spend on,” Commissioner Higgins said. “We want to lighten the load for parents and teachers heading into the school year, and by providing our students with essential school supplies not only are we bringing smiles to families but setting up our children for success.”
The Blue Backpack Project is one of the longest-running free school supply initiatives in our community and dramatically reduces the financial burden on parents and teachers. Commissioner Higgins is a sponsor of the Blue Backpack Project, and Amigos for Kids year-long free after-school program.
