For Miami-Dade Commissioner Kionne McGhee, the struggle to improve the quality of life for his community continues although he is at the top of his game today. Dressed in a sleek black suit and sporting that 1,000-watt smile that is his signature, he shakes every hand and hugs every elder attending the world premiere of a feature film about his life called “The Reject.” The 400-seat History Lyric Theater is packed with fans, supporters and family who cheered, laughed and cried along with McGhee as the gifted actors portraying him make their way from elementary to high school despite being labeled as emotionally handicapped.

Co-produced by Romeoland Studios and led by Actor and Rapper Romeo Miller, formerly known as Lil’ Romeo, “The Reject” is a film that delves into the topic of neurodiversity with a level of authenticity rarely seen in cinema.

“The Reject’ isn’t just a movie; it’s my story,” McGhee explains. “It dives deep into the kind of trauma that people in marginalized communities face – poverty, violence, and a broken education system. What sets this film apart is how it explores neurodiversity, something rarely seen in movies, and it does so in a way that’s real and raw. This film isn’t just about my journey; it’s about breaking down barriers, challenging the status quo, and giving a voice to those who’ve been overlooked.”

You see, I have heard the Commissioner’s story many times. How his brief

time in jail inspired him to pursue a law degree. McGhee ultimately graduated from Howard University and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, became a prosecutor, served as a Florida House Leader in the Florida House, and now holds office as the County Commissioner for District 9. But it still gives me goosebumps and brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it.

The reality is that his story could have been mine, could have been yours, could be your child’s story today and that is what he is working to change. He wants to make the world a better place by launching a “movement” to provide resources to kids and parents to help them manage the challenges and traumas they face in school and life.

McGhee understands the power of community and how working together with like minded people he can improve the lives of children today and tomorrow. For McGhee, the struggle continues and he is eager for the fight.
