Miami-Dade County Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez (District 5) has been named the 2025 Housing Advocate of the Year by the Miami Association of Realtors, recognizing her leadership and advocacy on critical housing issues impacting residents across Miami-Dade County.
The award honors Commissioner Lopez’s work advancing condominium reform, her sponsorship, passage and implementation of Florida’s Live Local Act, and her leadership in championing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as a tool to expand attainable housing options.
“Miami-Dade is facing a housing affordability crisis that requires bold and collaborative solutions,” said Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez. “I’m honored to receive this recognition from the Miami Association of Realtors and grateful for the opportunity to work to protect residents, increase housing supply, and ensure our policies put people first. Housing stability is fundamental to strong communities, and I remain committed to doing the hard work to deliver real solutions.”

Commissioner Lopez has been a leading voice on condominium safety and affordability, working to balance life-safety requirements with financial feasibility for residents, particularly seniors and longtime homeowners. As a Member of the Florida House of Representatives, she sponsored and passed the Live Local Act, landmark legislation that enables developers to build more residential projects that include affordable housing by allowing them to proceed without being subject to certain city and county zoning and development requirements that had previously impeded housing production. Through this legislation and her continued work on local implementation, Commissioner Lopez has helped provide municipalities with the tools and clarity needed to responsibly increase housing supply while maintaining appropriate local oversight. In addition, her advocacy for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) has focused on creating gentle density, supporting multigenerational living, and providing homeowners with flexible, attainable housing options.
