Miami-Dade County Commissioners recently unanimously approved legislation filed by District 6 Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera, creating the “Golden Paws Program,” which aims to connect seniors with pets needing forever homes.

“Our shelters are overwhelmed, and our dedicated Animal Services team is tirelessly working to manage the significant influx of dogs and cats in need of homes,” said Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera. “This initiative offers a wonderful opportunity for our seniors to enjoy the benefits of pet companionship while also helping to alleviate the burden on our shelters.”

The program is open to Miami-Dade County residents ages 65 or older who adopt a pet from the county’s Animal Services Department. Eligible seniors will receive waived adoption and spay/neuter fees, assistance with pet food, and additional support services to help care for their new companions.

Under Commissioner Cabrera’s leadership, the program also will establish partnerships with veterinary clinics, non-profit organizations, and local businesses to enhance support and find loving homes for these animals. Additionally, the legislation includes a fundraising component and collaborations with pet-related groups to fund these initiatives, ensuring the sustainability and long-term success of the “Golden Paws Program.”
