The State of Florida recently announced that Miami-Dade County and South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) received a $3 million joint grant award from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Innovative Tech Grant Program to test water quality technologies that reduce nutrient pollution levels in the C-7/Little River Canal Basin.

“The health of our Biscayne Bay is the health of our county and our residents, and this grant helps us continue protecting it,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said. “Thanks to our strong partnership with the South Florida Water Management District, we are identifying innovative nature-based projects that reduce pollution in canals, improve water management, and protect our precious Biscayne Bay. This will restore seagrass, and protect the native plants and animals that call our bay home.”

The grant is part of the Innovative Technology Grant Program in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which facilitates allocation of this funding and has further engaged with the State of Florida Blue-Green Algae Task Force to ensure the program is optimizing its evaluation and successes. It also will complement Miami-Dade County’s implementation of the Biscayne Bay Task Force recommendations.

“As SFWMD continues to implement strategies and plans to improve water management, ecosystem and community resilience in South Florida, we are glad to partner with Miami Dade County to test innovative pollution reduction technology,” said SFWMD executive director Drew Bartlett. “Thank you to Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the support in identifying new ways to respond to Florida’s water resource challenges. This project is just one exciting part of SFWMD’s overall resiliency strategy.”

The project will test three technologies to help prevent pollution in Biscayne Bay: Bold & Gold Filtration Media is a biosorption activated media (BAM), AbTech Smart Sponge and Water Warriors Poseidon Pellets were selected based on nitrogen and phosphorus nutrient reduction capability, scalability, and innovative promise.
