County launches humanitarian aid drive for Colombia earthquake relief

In response to the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia recently, Miami-Dade County, in partnership with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) and United Way Miami, is launching a humanitarian aid drive to support survivors, families, and communities affected by the disaster.
“Today, our hearts are with the people of Colombia and with the many Colombian families here in Miami-Dade County who are anxiously awaiting news from loved ones,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “The devastation caused by this powerful earthquake has displaced families and impacted communities across the country.
“Miami-Dade County stands in solidarity with the Colombian people, and we are committed to supporting immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts. I encourage our residents to come together and give generously to help those in need,” Mayor Levine Cava added.
GEM will be accepting both monetary and item donations, with a strong emphasis on financial contributions. Monetary donations allow relief partners to purchase needed supplies locally, move aid quickly, and support local recovery efforts on the ground. GEM also is accepting a limited number of priority items at its Doral warehouse.
“Miami-Dade County has a long history of stepping up when communities here at home and around the world face disaster, and we are mobilizing that same spirit of support for Colombia,” said Pete Gomez, director of Miami-Dade County’s Department of Emergency Management. “Our team is coordinating closely with GEM, United Way Miami, and our relief partners to help ensure assistance reaches impacted communities quickly and responsibly. Every donation can make a meaningful difference as families begin the difficult process of recovery.”
Residents who wish to support relief efforts are encouraged to make a monetary donation or contribute essential items identified by relief partners as priority needs for impacted communities. A list of requested supplies and donation information follows.

Shelter supplies: Sleeping bags, tents, cots, blankets and pillows.
Hygiene: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper and wet wipes.
