This winter, Chabad in Coral Gables will lead a six-session course exploring the real-life questions that Jews have asked their sages across history. Classes begin on Wednesday, Jan 28, 7:30 p.m., at 1827 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables.
Uncovering 30 true stories captured in a fascinating genre of Jewish literature, “Captivating Cases in Rabbinic Responsa” offers students an enriching window into the Jewish past.
“You can see the full spectrum of Jewish life imprinted in the responsa literature,” said Rabbi Avraham Stolik, director of Chabad. “Community disputes, agonizing personal choices, dealing with antisemitism — and questions as simple as ‘Is my chicken kosher?’”
Additionally, this course provides an insight into how rabbis composed thoughtful answers to new and novel questions.
This course, developed by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, offers students a glimpse into how Jews have lived across the ages and the values they have held dear. It also clears away the confusion surrounding Jewish law, showing the thoughtful process sages used — and still use — to answer the questions they were asked.
Captivating Cases in Rabbinic Responsa is approved as continuing legal education (CLE) in the state of Florida.
“Jewish law has been anything but static,” said Steven F. Friedell, JD, a professor of law at Rutgers University Law School.
He said the course “provides insight into how rabbis have met challenges of a world beset by sometimes drastic changes in culture, science, politics, and economic circumstances” and shows how they “helped Jewish law retain its vital role in maintaining and strengthening the Jewish community.”
According to Suzanne Last Stone, JD, professor of Jewish Law and Contemporary Civilization at Yeshiva University, “Students will encounter fascinating examples of how the rabbinic authors of responsa, like their common-law counterparts, balanced rules and principles: the technical demands of the law with individual emotional need, societal change, and ethical concerns.”
The course will be offered in-person as well as over Zoom. Sign-in information will be provided upon enrollment. Interested students may call 305-490-7572 or visit ChabadGables.com/JLI for registration and for other course-related information.
