Cristo Rey Miami High School (CRM) — a college and career preparatory 9-12 high school with an exclusive corporate work study educational model — has announced plans to open its doors in July for its Summer Success Institute in preparation for the academic school year 2022-23.
The new Cristo Rey Miami High School will be established at 125 NE 119 St. in North Miami, recently closing on the 2.14-acre property. The phased construction will include a large multipurpose restored building, an all-new, four-level structure with classrooms, and open-air courtyards.
The Cristo Rey Network educational model combines four years of rigorous academic study with four years of professional work experience and mentorship at local companies through its distinctive Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). With Miami’s dynamic business climate and economic boom in the technology, financial and international sectors, students of Cristo Rey Miami High School are afforded the opportunity to work for and contribute to these companies that partner with CRM.
“At Cristo Rey, we equip students with the academic training, character development and real-world work experiences to advance their professional journey, while enhancing the industries our students interact with and positively impact,” said Anamarie G. Moreiras, president of Cristo Rey Miami High School. “Spending my career improving student achievement, Cristo Rey Miami offers the educational development and financial resources that underserved students in Miami may not get elsewhere.”
A private, independent Catholic High School, Cristo Rey Miami — aligned to the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards, the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards, and the SAT — follows a proven, transformational model of a college-preparatory high school curriculum accessible to economically challenged families in Miami. Applications are currently open for parents and families to review eligibility and process for 100 freshmen during CRM’s first year, which includes the Summer Success Institute four-week, mandatory academic tutoring and corporate work readiness training program.
“We don’t have to go very far for a success story on Cristo Rey students,” Moreiras added.
“Our own Miami school principal, Cesar Muñoz, graduated in 2007 from Cristo Rey Network’s first school, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago. At 32 years old, he is currently completing an Educational Leadership PhD from DePaul University.”
Muñoz spent his four years while at Cristo Rey completing his corporate works study at top advertising agency Leo Burnett, where he experienced and impacted pop culture. He was later hired for two years before becoming a full-time undergraduate student at University of Illinois and then completing his Master of Arts in Teaching from National Louis University.
Corporate sponsors for Cristo Rey Miami High School include AT&T, Baptist Health South Florida, Holland & Knight, Jackson Health System, J.P. Morgan, and a vast variety of corporations and family-owned business in several industries. Through the Corporate Work Study Program, Cristo Rey Miami students’ earnings offset 50 percent of their tuition, complemented with the Florida tax credit scholarship, and a maximum 10 percent family contribution. Additionally, the Cristo Rey Network currently partners with 67 universities throughout the country who provide up to 100 percent financial need assistance for Cristo Rey graduates.
A Catholic learning community, though the religious affiliation is not a prerequisite, Cristo Rey students are two times more likely to complete a college degree when compared to their peer group. Network-wide, the college acceptance rate is 98 percent, and 91 percent of students enroll in college.
