The month of February is all about love, romance, and big moments—and for many couples, it’s the perfect time to make things official. In 2025 alone, the Clerk of the Court and Comptroller (COCC) processed 27,831 marriage license applications and officiated 16,176 ceremonies in Miami-Dade County! That’s a lot of love—and a lot of happily-ever-afters.
Before walking down the aisle, couples must obtain a marriage license. Both partners must apply together, either online in advance or in person at a COCC Marriage License Bureau and the Branch Court location. Be sure to bring a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license issued by any state in the U.S., passport, U.S. military ID, alien registration card, state identification card issued by any state in the U.S. or naturalization certificate in its original form.
A marriage license fee is required, but Florida residents who complete a premarital preparation course may qualify for a reduced fee.
Planning a last-minute Valentine’s Day wedding? Florida residents who do not complete a premarital course face a three-day waiting period, while non-Florida residents are exempt— perfect for a romantic destination wedding! Once issued, a license is valid for 60 days and can be used anywhere in Florida.
After the “I do’s,” the officiant returns the completed license to the Clerk’s office for official recording. Once recorded, your marriage becomes an official public record, and certified copies of your marriage certificate are available through the COCC.
