Dade County Federal Credit Union recently donated more than $43,000 to the Overtown Youth Center. The donation will fund summer programs for students from ages 15 to 17 and will help provide valuable assistance to children and families in the community.

The Overtown Youth Center was started in 2003 by NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning and real estate developer Martin Z. Margulies. It opened its first facility in Overtown with 18,000 square feet and recently it signed a 90-year lease with the City of Miami and is nearing completion of a 56,000-square-foot facility at the same location.

The Overtown Youth Center has a variety of missions, including a Children’s Academy, health and wellness programs, and parenting and family Programs. It focuses on three main tracks: the high school track to get kids to finish school, the employment track to help them find job training and placement, and an armed forces track to help them find employment in the United States Armed Forces.

It serves Overtown, Little Havana, Miami Gardens, Allapattah, Miramar, and other underserved communities. The new building has 14 classrooms and will serve 5,000 children and families.

The center is committed to helping underserved children and families in the Miami area, and the recent donation from Dade County Federal Credit Union is a testament to the credit union’s commitment to serving the community.

“We are proud to partner with such a fine institution,” said George Joseph, president and CEO of Dade County Federal. “OYC has greatly expanded its mandate to serve children and families throughout Miami-Dade and beyond. We have always supported children’s charities, particularly those that so closely align with our mission.”
