Dade Heritage Trust, in partnership with the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department, recently hosted a cleanup day at the Miami City Cemetery, 1800 NE Second Ave., with Boy Scouts from several local troops. Scouts cleaned hundreds of veterans’ grave markers, trimmed trees and shrubs, and learned about the history of Miami.
“It’s wonderful to see the next generation taking action and helping to preserve one of the Magic City’s most cherished sites,” said Christine Rupp, Dade Heritage Trust executive director. “This is not only the city’s oldest cemetery, but it is also the final resting place of many of Miami’s pioneers, founders and veterans of several wars.”
Dade Heritage Trust (DHT) is Miami-Dade County’s largest preservation organization. Founded in 1972 as a grassroots organization to save and protect Miami-Dade County’s historic buildings, DHT’s mission is to preserve our community’s architectural, environmental and cultural heritage. Through a variety of programs, advocacy projects, special events, exhibits and presentations, DHT furthers the mission by engaging Miami-Dade residents and visitors in preservation education.
