Det. John T. Messenger Sr. named M-DCPS Police 'Officer of the Year'

As proposed by board member Mari Tere Rojas, the Miami-Dade County Public School Board recognized Miami-Dade Schools Police Department Det. John T. Messenger Sr. for being named “Office of the Year.”

Det. Messenger Sr. has worked for the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department for 23 years, and currently is assigned to the General Investigations Divisions. He has a total of 27 years in law enforcement experience and previously served as a School Resource Officer at G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School.

Messenger is not only a detective, but also serves as a gang specialist, a police instructor, and a part-time member of the Gang Strike Force, Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, and the Department of Homeland Security.

He has worked and trained with multi-agencies regarding the response to critical incidents and has given countless workshops in the areas of youth violence, school safety, gang awareness, among many others. Additional duties include working with the department’s Gang Free Schools and Communities Initiative and coordinating with the Miami-Dade County Multi-Agency Gang Task Force, and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Safe Street Task Force, and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

On Jan. 12, 2021, Det. Messenger, along with Lt. David Rodak were involved in an investigation which yielded the largest narcotics seizure in the history of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. On Sept. 22, 2021, Det. Messenger was recognized by the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, honored by receiving the “Officer of the Year” award.

The safety and security of students and community members is a priority for him, and his decades of dedication are testament of that,” Rojas said. “I also congratulate Chief Lopez and the entire team, as they have worked arduously to ensure the safety of all.”
