Dade Heritage Trust (DHT) is marking a milestone in Miami’s history as its iconic headquarters in Brickell turns 120 years old in 2025. Originally built in 1905 as the office and surgery of Dr. James M. Jackson — the namesake of Jackson Memorial Hospital — this cherished structure remains a testament to Miami’s rich architectural and cultural heritage.

One of the last remaining historic buildings in Brickell, the DHT headquarters has served as a beacon of preservation and advocacy since the organization made it home in 1978. Its enduring presence is not only a tribute to Dr. Jackson’s contributions to Miami but also a powerful reminder of the importance of safeguarding the city’s historical landmarks.

“For nearly five decades, this building has been at the heart of our mission to protect and celebrate Miami’s history,” said Christine Rupp, executive director of Dade Heritage Trust.

“As we commemorate its 120th anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to preservation and invite the community to join us in honoring this remarkable legacy.”

The historic structure was one of Miami’s earliest preservation success stories. Dr. Jackson ensured its survival when he moved the building in 1917 rather than see it demolished. In the 1970s, the City of Miami officially acquired the building. Through community efforts, it was restored and entrusted to DHT, where it continues to serve as a hub for education, advocacy, and heritage tourism.

To celebrate this special anniversary, DHT will host an Open House on Saturday, Mar, 15. Visitors are encouraged to experience this treasured piece of Miami’s past and learn about ongoing efforts to protect the city’s historic places.

Founded in 1972, Dade Heritage Trust is Miami-Dade County’s largest nonprofit historic preservation organization. Through advocacy, education, and preservation initiatives, DHT works to protect and celebrate Miami’s unique architectural and cultural heritage.
