A student-curated exhibit entitled Entrances and Exits: Resonating Impressions of World’s Fairs will open on April 11, 2013 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at New World School of the Arts Gallery.
Entrances and Exits features items from the private collection of Mitchell Wolfson Jr., including a vast array of objects, ephemera and souvenirs from various World’s Fairs that portray the resonating experience of the masses of tourists that visited these international expositions. World’s Fairs created an illusion of faraway lands and introduced innovative technological advancements that left the public in awe. Entrances and Exits investigates the original objects that lured contemporary audiences to these fairs, along with those that they took away with them to commermorate these experiences.
“I am thrilled to have these students and their contemporary perspectives utilize this collection as a cultural laboratory to interpret, analyze and present these celebratory materials. Human behavior is best understood by what the species attempts to make and this exhibition is sure to be a testimony to understanding,” adds Mitchell Wolfson Jr.
Opening night of Entrances and Exits will offer a lively experience similar to being at a World’s Fair with live music and international food and drinks provided by The DRB, El Cartel, First Avenue Bistro and Pizzarium.
Entrances and Exits: Resonating Impressions of World’s Fairs, is curated by Miami Dade College and New World School of the Arts students: Katie Acosta, Amparo Baquerizas, Inez Barlatier, Anika Batista, Maggie Génova-Cordoví, Rebecca Flor, Chris Ingalls, Anthony Quintana, Danilo A. Mantilla, Jessica Martin, Luna Lopez, and Veronika Lugo.
The exhibition is the final product of a yearlong Museum Studies program offered by Miami Dade College and New World School of the Arts at the Mitchell Wolfson Jr. Study Centre with support from the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation.
The exhibition will run from April 11 to May 31 2013 at the New World School of the Arts Gallery located at 25 NE 2nd Street.
Gallery hours are Tuesday- Friday, from 12 pm to 5pm.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
