The Miami-Dade County Domestic Violence Oversight Board (DVOB) will host two free screenings of The Last Drop, a sci-fi film highlighting the subtle signs of relationship abuse that often escalate to domestic violence, directed by Adam Joel.
The showings are part of a month-long initiative to raise awareness about domestic and intimate partner violence. The 40-minute film, with Spanish and Creole subtitles, will be followed by a panel discussion with local experts and the director. Information about local resources and support will be available for those affected in our communities.
Showings will be at the following times and locations:
• Oct. 8, 6-9 p.m., at Florida International University Mary Anne Wolfe Theater, 3000 NE 151 St., North Miami; register at https://events.humanitix.com/national-domestic-violence-awareness-month-film-screening-the-last-drop
• Oct. 9, 10 a.m.-noon, University of Miami Bill Cosford Cinema, 5030 Brunson Dr., Coral Gables; register at https://events.humanitix.com/national-domestic-violence-awareness-month-film-screening-the-last-drop-77unx4d7
“As a survivor of abuse, I am thrilled to bring my abuse-prevention film, The Last Drop, to Florida. By screening and discussing this unique sci-fi film about abuse with local leaders and community members, we have the incredible opportunity to change the narrative about abuse in Miami-Dade County and beyond,” Joel said.
An average of 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States, more than 12 million women and men over the course of a single year.
As part of the month’s awareness initiative, the DVOB asks the community to wear purple and for buildings throughout the county to be illuminated in purple during October to show solidarity. If you work in a building that can be illuminated, contact DVOB executive director Elizabeth Regalado at Elizabeth.Regalado@miamidade.gov.
All meetings and events of the Domestic Violence Oversight Board are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend.
