Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on Wednesday, Nov. 6, named Edouard Duval-Carrié as the new Miami-Dade County artist-in-residence at the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs’ artist panel discussion celebrating the Art in Public Places program’s 50th anniversary. Duval-Carrié is an internationally renowned Haitian contemporary artist based in Miami.

“I am pleased to name Edouard Duval-Carrié as the incoming Miami-Dade County artist-in-residence. His artworks challenge traditional narratives and embrace the rich diversity of the Caribbean and beyond. His art captivates and invites dialogue and reflection on our shared human experience,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

“Edouard’s contributions, along with all the magnificent works of public art featured in today’s panel, breathe life into our neighborhoods, turning our streets, parks and public spaces into open galleries where we all can experience the transformative power of the arts.”

Born and raised in Haiti, Duval-Carrié has a studio in Miami’s Little Haiti. His artworks and installations often present themes of spirituality, history, and migration and have been featured in Europe and throughout the Americas. He is the second ever artist-in-residence in Miami-Dade County, following Xavier Cortada, whose practice focuses on climate causes, and was named the inaugural Miami-Dade County artist-in-residence in 2022.

Duval-Carrié also was one of the featured artist panelists celebrating 50 years of Art in Public Places in Miami-Dade County. His 2019 public artwork Oak Grove Rhapsody activates the Father Gerard Jean-Juste Community Center at Oak Grove Park with site-specific installations. Other artists featured as part of the panel were Michele Oka Doner, Rosario Marquart and Roberto Behar (R & R Studios), Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Magnus Sodamin, and GeoVanna Gonzalez.

With the support of the Miami-Dade County mayor and the county commissioners, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs directs the Art in Public Places program and serves its board, the Art in Public Places Trust, by commissioning, curating, maintaining and promoting the County’s public art collection.

The artworks are selected through a competitive process through a Professional Advisory Committee comprised of experts in the field of art, architecture and design. For more information about the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places program visit www.miamidadepublicart.org.
