      By: Jonathan Freidin

Florida has led the nation in divisive debates and legislative actions that have threatened the rights and well-being of LGBTQ individuals. In such an environment, fostering educational opportunities for marginalized communities has become paramount. Thus the significance of my law firm, Freidin Brown, and SAVE’s annual scholarship program cannot be overstated.

With over $100,000 given in scholarships over the last five years, Freidin Brown and SAVE have taken a significant step toward building a more inclusive society. In a time of heightened attacks on the LGBTQ community and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, this program aims to provide educational opportunities and support for LGBTQ and allied students who aspire to drive social justice reforms.

These kinds of scholarships serve as a beacon of hope, enabling LGBTQ and allied students to pursue higher education and engage in the activism necessary to challenge systemic inequalities.

According to the National Association for Law Placement report on diversity in law firms, the representation of women, minority, and LGBTQ attorneys in law firms has been increasing over the years. The report states that LGBTQ attorneys, specifically, accounted for 3.8% of partners, 2.5% of associates, and 2.7% of summer associates in participating law firms. Although these figures represent progress when compared to prior years, there is still much room for improvement.

The Social Justice Scholarship program also highlights the importance of intersectionality and the power of diverse voices in the fight for justice. As applicants are invited from various backgrounds, the initiative fosters collaboration and a sense of unity among individuals who share the common goal of promoting social equality.

Applications for the Freidin Brown, P.A. & SAVE Social Justice Scholarships opened on June 1 and will close on August 25. Interested candidates can submit their applications online through the program’s dedicated website. Finalists will have the opportunity to participate in interviews with representatives from both organizations before the winners are announced in September. The scholarships will be directly funded to by the recipients’ respective schools, further solidifying the organization’s commitment to supporting their educational endeavors.

The annual Social Justice Scholarship program is a powerful reminder that change is possible. By investing in LGBTQ and allied students who are dedicated to social justice causes, SAVE and Freidin Brown are actively building a more inclusive and equitable Florida. Through education and empowerment, these scholarships will give deserving students the tools they need to build a brighter tomorrow.
