Hundreds of folks came braved the heat on Father’s Day to give dads what they like most, “Cars & Cigars,” at The Barnacle Historic State Park State.
Whether they enjoyed the “drive down Memory Lane” by taking in vintage autos, or were treated to a hand-rolled stogie — or both — the annual event is a classic Coconut Grove tradition each year in the best backyard on Biscayne Bay.
The day was full of fun activities with something for every member of the family to enjoy, including a classic car contest, a biergarten, an on-site cigar roller, kid’s crafts, and 1970s Country Rock music by the Tall Boys.
“Cars & Cigars is one of my favorite events at The Barnacle,” said Alyn Pruett, president of The Barnacle Society. “It has the elegant feel of a classic car show, the relaxed ambiance of The Barnacle grounds, and great activities for everyone in the family.
“Kids can make crafts for their dad, grownups can enjoy a beer in the biergarten while listening to great live music — and, as always, The Barnacle is a perfect place for a picnic.”
The five-acre state park on the shore of Biscayne Bay is site of the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove’s most charming and influential pioneers. He built the house in 1891.
Father’s Day guests were welcome to bring picnics and enjoy the beautiful view of Biscayne Bay. Fresh burgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs also were available at a nominal fee with all the proceeds going The Barnacle Society and its efforts at maintaining the 127-year-old estate and boat house.
The event was included with the regular $2 per person park-entry fee, and as always, kids under the age of 5 were admitted free.
Throughout the year, The Barnacle Society sponsors numerous events, including moonlight concerts and outdoor films, in an effort to raise funds to support this lovely historic state park.
The Barnacle Historic State Park is located at 3485 Main Hwy. in Coconut Grove. For information, call the Park Ranger Station at 305-442-6866.
